• The 2025 UNNF offers fellows a monthly stipend during their Fellowship and stays in New York, including the second phase at the Host Institution.
• UN fellowship also covers transport costs. Fellows participating in the 9-month United Nations-Nippon Foundation Fellowship will receive economy class air tickets for travel from their home country to DOALOS in New York, then from New York to their host institution and from the host institution back to their home country.
• Moreover, the Fellowship provides medical insurance to all fellows.
• The UN Nippon Fellowship will also provide a textbook allowance of $100 per month for the second phase of the Fellowship.

• All those applying for the United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship must be between 25 and 40 years old and be from a developing country.
• Similarly, applicants must have completed a first university degree and be able to conduct independent advanced academic research and study.
• Mid-level professionals and government officials are eligible to apply. They should be engaged in ocean affairs and the law of the sea, particularly in implementing UNCLOS and SDG-14.
• The proposed research and study plan of every applicant must clearly contribute and add to their nation’s implementation of ocean affairs and the law of the sea.
• Applicants must be free of all other responsibilities during the entire course of the Fellowship unless otherwise authorized.
• In addition, UN fellows will have to work on key deliverables. This includes a written 100-page thesis, a well-designed research presentation, and an ocean governance matrix. Several other assignments will be completed by all fellows during the entire duration of the Fellowship.
